Australian tennis star Thanasi Kokkinakis has shared his thoughts on Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner ahead of the US Open, following the announcement of the men’s and women’s singles main draws. While discussions about potential winners and top contenders’ paths to the finals are already underway, Kokkinakis spoke to Australian Open TV about who he believes could lift the men’s singles trophy.
He revealed his preference between Sinner and Alcaraz, two players who have been in the spotlight recently—Sinner having battled a virus, and Alcaraz exiting early from the US Open mixed doubles. Kokkinakis analysed both players’ styles and mindsets, highlighting what he sees as Alcaraz’s only weakness.
He cited Sinner’s consistency and composure as reasons he favours the Italian, while describing Alcaraz as a powerhouse with an exciting variety of shots, noting that even a dynamic player like him has exploitable areas on court.
“It’s so tough to say because I think both at their top, top level, I think Carlos probably has the edge. He has a little bit more variety and a bit more firepower. But I think Carlos’s only weakness is when he gets bored on court,” said Kokkinakis.
On the other hand, Kokkinakis described Sinner as more “mentally stable,” emphasising his consistency and reliability on court. Unlike Alcaraz, Sinner isn’t focused on hitting spectacular shots; instead, he delivers a steady performance that audiences can always count on.
“I think Sinner is obviously an incredible player, but I think he’s a bit more mentally stable, and you know what you are going to get from him day in and day out. There is no weaknesses in Jannik’s game,” he added.
Kokkinakis said that in a big event like the US Open, the key isn’t who can hit the most spectacular shots, but who can stay composed and play their game, finishing matches strongly.
