Former England captain Nasser Hussain has offered his perspective on Jofra Archer's inclusion in England's Test squad. He considers it a "gamble worth taking" while urging caution regarding his immediate entry into the playing XI for the second Test against India at Edgbaston.
Jofra Archer's potential comeback sparks debate.
Archer, whose last Test appearance was in February 2021, is in contention for the second Test starting July 2. The 30-year-old has been struggling with persistent elbow and back injuries. He recently made his return to red-ball cricket for Sussex, bowling 18 overs against Durham and securing figures of 1/32.
Hussain, in his analysis on Sky Sports, emphasized the emotional and physical challenges Archer has overcome: "Firstly, it's great news for Archer and England. Jofra has endured so much with those injuries, the rehab, the pain, and the mental strain of repeated injuries and comebacks. It's fantastic to see him back in the squad, despite not having played a Test match in four years."
He cautioned against accelerating Archer's inclusion in the Edgbaston XI. "I think it's too much of a risk this week. It may have gone exceptionally well – I'm not privy to Jofra Archer's physical condition – and they might consider playing him this week. However, the question then becomes: who do you leave out?"
Despite these reservations, Hussain expressed optimism about Archer’s long-term impact. "I do think it is a gamble worth taking, I just don't know if it's worth taking this week. I would do it a week after at Lord's."
England currently leads the five-match series 1-0 following their five-wicket victory at Leeds. The squad remains unchanged for Edgbaston.
