India Intensifies Training for Second Test Against England; Bumrah's Absence Raises Eyebrows

The Indian cricket team has commenced its preparations for the crucial second Test against England, holding their first net session at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on Friday. This practice marks the team's initial on-field activity following their disappointing five-wicket defeat in the opening Test at Headingley, which allowed England to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

While the entire squad was present at the ground, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah notably refrained from participating in any on-field activities. Prasidh Krishna was also absent from bowling or drills. The remaining team members engaged in a comprehensive training session. Mohammed Siraj dedicated a significant amount of time to honing his batting skills, while head coach Gautam Gambhir engaged in extended discussions with pacers Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep.

Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant were seen batting in the nets, and other bowlers, except for Bumrah and Prasidh, went through their bowling routines. Despite the scrutiny following the loss at Leeds, the team's atmosphere appeared relaxed. The squad, currently undergoing a transition phase, continues to receive unwavering support from the team leadership, with senior players actively mentoring the younger members.

Concerns surrounding Bumrah's workload management remain a focal point. After bowling 44 overs in the first Test, indications suggest that the Edgbaston Test could be the designated match for Bumrah to rest. Head coach Gambhir emphasized in the post-match press conference that the match score will not influence the decision on Bumrah's appearances, and each game will be assessed individually.

Given the short four-day gap between the second Test at Edgbaston (July 2–6) and the third at Lord’s (July 10–14), both Gambhir and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar have stressed the importance of managing Bumrah's workload. They have hinted that his availability will be determined with a long-term perspective, regardless of the series situation.

Prior to resuming their training, the players participated in a team bonding activity at an adventure park in Birmingham on Thursday, providing a refreshing break before the intensity of the Test series resumed.
