Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary Indian cricketer, has publicly condemned the proliferation of fake quotes falsely attributed to him on various sports websites and social media platforms.
In a video message shared on his official Instagram account, Gavaskar directly addressed the issue, highlighting the misrepresentation of his views and urging cricket enthusiasts to exercise caution when encountering such statements.
"Over the last few months, it has come to my notice that a lot of sports websites and individual accounts have been attributing comments and quotes to me that I've never made," Gavaskar stated in the video. He emphasized the importance of due diligence: “I request everybody to verify, fact-check, and not to believe everything that they read, particularly coming from some of these individual accounts and sports websites. God bless you all.”
Gavaskar, currently in England as a commentator for the ongoing Test series between India and England, expressed his concern about the widespread circulation of fabricated remarks. Although he refrained from naming specific platforms, his disapproval of the deceptive trend was evident.
These developments follow a series of alleged "quotes" attributed to the 75-year-old veteran during India’s first Test loss at Headingley, particularly after Rishabh Pant’s twin centuries and Jasprit Bumrah’s significant bowling efforts. Several platforms reportedly twisted Gavaskar's actual commentary, including a humorous reversal of his Melbourne comment about Pant, to boost engagement.
