Former Indian fast bowler Varun Aaron has voiced concerns over Ravindra Jadeja's performance during the final day of the first Test against England at Headingley.
Ravindra Jadeja faces criticism after the first Test.
The senior left-arm spinner's accuracy came into question as England successfully chased a challenging target, securing a five-wicket victory and taking a 1-0 lead in the series.
Speaking on Star Sports’ Follow the Blues, Aaron suggested that Jadeja failed to capitalize on the available rough patches on the fifth-day pitch.
"Reviewing the footage of Jadeja bowling over the wicket, it’s evident that he frequently missed the rough. His deliveries were either too short, too fast, or too full, often landing in the middle of the wicket instead of exploiting the rough," Aaron noted, highlighting Jadeja's struggle to maintain a consistent and challenging line and length.
Jadeja's final figures of 1 for 104 in 24 overs underscored the lack of control and effectiveness needed to contain England's run chase. Ben Duckett, in particular, found success with the reverse sweep, disrupting Jadeja’s rhythm as England confidently executed their aggressive game plan.
Aaron further criticized Jadeja’s inability to rise to the occasion, especially considering his extensive experience.
“Given his experience and proficiency in bowling into the rough, particularly in Indian conditions where it's prevalent, and considering the numerous match-winning performances he and (Ravichandran) Ashwin have delivered together, one would expect him to exploit the rough on the fifth day and secure a historic victory for India," he added.
This critique serves as a wake-up call for the Indian bowling unit, which struggled to counter England’s aggressive approach. While Jadeja has often performed in crucial moments, his disappointing performance at Leeds has sparked discussions about India’s bowling strategies, particularly in overseas conditions.
