Gavaskar Advocates for Kuldeep Yadav's Inclusion in Second Test Against England
Following India's recent defeat to England by five wickets in the Leeds Test, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar is urging strategic changes to the team's lineup. A key suggestion is the inclusion of Kuldeep Yadav, a skilled spinner, in place of Shardul Thakur for the crucial second Test match in Birmingham. Gavaskar anticipates that the conditions at the Birmingham pitch will favor wrist spin, making Yadav a valuable asset.
"Regardless of Jasprit Bumrah's fitness, I believe Kuldeep Yadav must be included in the team," Gavaskar stated during a broadcast on Tuesday. "I recommend he replace Shardul Thakur, as the Birmingham pitch is likely to offer some assistance to wrist spinners."
Thakur, who was playing his first Test in over two years, did not significantly impact the game. He bowled only six overs in the first innings, conceding 38 runs without taking a wicket, and scored only five runs across both innings. Although Thakur briefly shone by dismissing Ben Stokes and Harry Brook with consecutive deliveries in the second innings, Gavaskar felt his overall performance lacked conviction.
Yadav, a leg-spinner, has played only one Test in England at Lord's in 2018, where he did not take any wickets. Despite this, Gavaskar believes his variety could be crucial in Birmingham.
Gavaskar also commented on the middle order, specifically regarding debutant Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair, both dismissed for ducks in the first innings at Headingley. Their dismissals triggered a collapse from a promising 430/3 to 471 all out.
While Gavaskar isn't currently advocating for their removal from the team, he suggested a possible reshuffle if India falls 0-2 behind in the series.
“If things don't go well in the second Test, maybe Sai (Sudharsan) and Karun (Nair) could be considered for a change. I don't want to drop them at the moment. Then I'd also look at Washington (Sundar), so that it really gives you a more solid batting, and also get a little more variety as far the bowling is concerned,” he said.
Following the disappointing loss to England at Headingley on Day 5, India aims to level the series when they face England at Edgbaston, starting on July 2.
