Mirabai Chanu Reveals Constant Thoughts on Training and Weight Management
Indian weightlifting sensation Mirabai Chanu has opened up about the mental pressures of maintaining her rigorous training schedule and strict weight requirements, even when spending time with loved ones. The Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medalist, competing in the 49kg category, is currently focused on preparing for the upcoming Commonwealth Championships.
"We do get some downtime to recover, especially after major events like the Asian Games or Olympics. I take that rest, but then it's right back into training. Spending time with family is important, especially after dedicating so much time to training, as it’s necessary to unwind," Mirabai shared on the "Game On" podcast series.
"That aspect is great, but then it’s time to get back into training. Next up are the Commonwealth Championships, which also serve as a qualifier for the Commonwealth Games. Right now, all our focus and preparations are directed towards that," she added.
Chanu also revealed the sacrifices she makes regarding travel and leisure. "We don’t often get to enjoy traveling like regular people. I do go out occasionally, but I can’t fully enjoy spending time with my family the way I’d like to, because we have to return to training. Since we've already invested so much time, we have to think about recovery, how to maintain our bodies... these thoughts are always at the forefront of my mind. I’m constantly thinking: when should I start training again? Will I be able to perform at my previous level?"
The Olympic medalist elaborated on the constant mental calculation involved in even simple activities like eating. "So honestly, training is always on our minds—even when eating! We consider: if I eat this, what effect will it have? Will I gain fat? Will my weight increase? Because of this, we can’t freely indulge in what we crave."
She admitted her love for junk food, but highlighted the discipline required to maintain her competitive edge. "I love junk food—especially pizza! Everyone knows that. But I still can’t eat it. Even when I’m not training, I really feel like eating it, but I restrain myself and think, ‘If I eat this, how will tomorrow’s training go?’ I have to manage my weight, especially keeping it at 50 kg. It’s very challenging—both training and maintaining that weight. So, even when I desire something, I have to resist and tell myself, ‘Not now, focus on the competition first.’"
Mirabai Chanu's impressive achievements include an Olympic silver medal, a gold and a silver medal at the World Championships, two golds and a silver at the Commonwealth Games, and a bronze at the Asian Championships, solidifying her position as a leading figure in Indian sports.
